Reflection Prompt: Reflect on what you plan to do to address the equity and ethics issues when applying technologies. You may share with us about what you have been doing by addressing these aspects and what you will change after learning in this module.
Description: This Modules focus was on Legal and Ethical issues, Health and Safety practices, and Security and Privacy Protection of computer technology in the school setting. As a Librarian in a school district, I face these issues frequently. I think these laws become issues when people don't take them seriously or when people are just unaware of the law(s). As a Technology Facilitator and/or Leader, I will educate teachers and students on these laws.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, was written to protect students from exploitation in public records. Teachers have a responsibility to protect students’ records. Challenges have heightened with the use of remote and portable device usage. Common threats to the security and/or privacy issues are careless users.
With information freedom comes laws to protect that freedom Teacher's must keep informed and so many students. It will become my responsibility to make sure everyone involved is informed and responsible.
Impact: One violation of these laws (FERPA) seems to be common in most school districts. Teachers do walk away from their computers forgetting to log out, leaving emails and gradebook programs exposed. Perhaps the answer is to make sure sensitive programs have inactivity log out settings after 10 minutes of inactivity on the screen. Teachers and Staff will have to understand this in order not to put the school district at risk.
Intent: In the past, I relied on posting signs of copyright laws (which wasn't always effective), as Technology Facilitator and Leader I will have to take it a step further by relaying the laws through discuss and other communications to make sure everyone is knowledgeable of copyright laws and APA styles for documenting use of information found on the internet and software.
